Hospital Medicine Groups have expanded and grown larger in recent years and because of that growth you can now expect to see more and more non-physician practice administrators than ever before. Not long ago, you wouldn’t see any non-physician management support at all and if you did, it was maybe a part-time clerical admin to do the small stuff around the office. But now it’s changed with the role of a non-physicians admins reported in practices all across the country.
There’s a big variation that exists in the roles of non-physicians, including their qualifications and backgrounds, but for the most part, they can be categorized as first-line management (coordinator or supervisor), middle management (manager, director or administrator) and senior management (executive director, president or CEO). According to SHM’s 2012 State of Hospital Medicine report on the increase in non-physicians admins, there were many in the south region of the country, with the lowest number out in the west. And there were a lot in multistate hospitalist companies, with private multispecialty or primary-care medical groups had the lowest of non-physicians admins.
The SHM report also found that the majority of these non-physicians admins fell into the middle management category and that they earned about $77,000 a year, while those in senior management went home with a median of $224,000. Those who were classified as first-line managers earned about $47,000.
Given more and more Hospital Medicine Groups are now hiring non-physicians admins, this opens up the industry to more qualified individuals than ever before.
